Dyslexiförbundet organises people with reading, writing, and calculating difficulties.
Dyslexiförbundet is a Swedish non-profit disability association. In English, our name is The Swedish National Association for Dyslexia and Dyscalculia.
Our aim is to improve the conditions of people with reading, writing, and calculating difficulties, dyslexia, and dyscalculia.
We work with:
- Counselling and support.
- Information activities.
- Interest policies.
- Social events.
- Projects.
About Dyslexia
Dyslexia is one reason for reading and writing difficulties. It entails problems with phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speed.
In Sweden, the number of people with dyslexia is between 5 and 8 percent. That means that among our 10 million population, at least 500,000 have dyslexia.
About Dyscalculia
Dyscalculia is one reason for calculating difficulties. It entails problems with number sense, including reckoning, magnitude comparison, and order.
In Sweden, the number of people with dyscalculia is between 3 and 5 per cent. That means that among our 10 million population, at least 300,000 have dyscalculia.
Consequences of Dyslexia and Dyscalculia
Dyslexia and dyscalculia can lead to failure in school and at work. It can also lead to exclusion and bad self-confidence.
Other causes for reading, writing and calculating difficulties
In total, 13 persons among every 100 people living in Sweden have significant reading difficulties. About 10 out of 100 students at the end of primary school do not get a passing grade in mathematics.
Other causes for reading, writing and calculating difficulties are, for example, that people can have
- Trouble understanding.
- Trouble learning and remembering.
- Poor education.
What can we do to prevent problems?
- Find children at risk of reading, writing and calculating difficulties.
- Act at once; don’t wait and see.
- Train with proven methods.
- Allow assistive technology.
- Use different modes to make content easy to understand (read-aloud, illustrations, and videos are some examples).
- Create an understanding environment.
